Learn Natural Dyes + Boxy Top
Thursdays, March 5 & 12 | 6-8:30 p.m.
Join us for a two-part workshop where we’ll combine the magic of natural dyes with the art of sewing your very own boxy top! Over two sessions, you will sew a cotton box top infused with your own personal touch.
Session 1: Sew a box top
In the first session of this two-part workshop, we’ll focus on sewing a simple, cotton box top using Becky Janes’ original pattern. We’ll walk through the construction step by step—measuring, cutting, assembling, and finishing your top. Along the way, you’ll learn foundational garment-sewing skills and be ready made to transform your top using natural dyes in class two!
Session 2: Naturally dye your top
In the second class, we’ll explore plant dyes to create unique and colorful fabrics for your top. You’ll learn how to work with natural dyes to create a palette of beautiful colors and patterns on fabric. A variety of dyes and modifiers will be available for you to create a rainbow of colors. Each piece of fabric will be unique.
This workshop is perfect for anyone looking to connect with slow craft and create something meaningful. All levels of experience are welcome, this class is for students ages 18+.
Becky Jane studied pattern making and design at Apparel and Arts in San Francisco, and has been teaching sewing and pattern drafting for 10+ years. She’s also the owner of By Becky Jane where she creates and sells custom apparel and accessories.
Kristin Arzt is a natural dyer, educator, gardener, and designer who teaches workshops and leads retreats across the country. Her work explores the intersection of textiles, plants, and sustainability, with a focus on making natural dye practices accessible through education. A lifelong learner and registered yoga teacher (RYT200), she is currently completing her third yoga teacher training and often weaves these teachings into her creative workshops. When not teaching, she grows seasonal dye plants at home, shares seeds with students, and continues to expand her practice through study with renowned dye artists and educators from around the world.
