Worn to Warm: Upcycle Garments to Quilt Blocks

$75.00

Saturday, November 22 | 2-5 p.m.

Do you have a garment in your closet that doesn’t fit your body or your style anymore but is too precious to donate or recycle? Dig up that garment and come transform it into textile art! It could be a personal item from your collection or your childhood or a friend or family member’s…it could also be a thrift store find that caught your eye. It should be something that draws your interest, but nothing TOO precious because we will be cutting it up!

We will discuss and demo ways to break down garments to maximize fabric for use in a quilt, then cut up our garments and combine them with solid-color scraps (provided in class) to create quilt blocks. We will discuss options for piecing including planning and sketching a design and/or improvisationally piecing. After the workshop this could become a block in a larger quilt, a stand-alone mini quilt, or you could stretch it on canvas to create a simple wall hanging.

You’ll learn:

  • Tips for breaking down a garment for use in textile art

  • Options for building blocks to cut the garment into for piecing

  • Simple techniques for composing your mini quilt top with your garment and solid color fabric scraps

All materials are included, but please bring a garment you would like to turn into a mini quilt top! Julia will provide extra garments in case you don’t have one you would like to use. We will also have a rainbow of solid color fabric scraps for you to choose from, but feel free to bring extra scraps from your fabric collection if there are any specific solid colors you know you’ll want to incorporate into your quilt top (prints welcome too!) We will not be quilting the pieces in class, finishing options will be discussed but will be at each participant’s discretion after the workshop.

Feel free to bring your own machine or use one of the studio machines! Beginner-friendly, all skill levels welcome. Participants should be familiar with how to use a sewing machine. Ages 16+

Julia Triman is a quilter and quilting teacher fascinated with the creative process and the philosophy of creativity. She shares her quilts and creativity stories at quiltingjulia.com.
